Australian Shepherd Personality
The personality of any dog breed is always going to depend a lot on how they are raised and in what environment they are raised. Some Aussies can be extremely outgoing while others are more reserved. If you want an outgoing and social dog, make sure that you socialize them enough when they are young. It is even a good idea to socialize them anyways to ensure that you don’t have an aggressive dog, which is never any good for anyone.
This breed of dog is always going to want to be a part of family events and needs a lot of attention. The only bad part of that scenario is that they can get really anxious if they don’t get that attention on a daily basis. That is why it is important to train them early and get them plenty of exercise along with other things to keep them occupied. They should always be kept on a leash when outside, and supervised when not on a leash anywhere. They are natural chasers because of their herding background, so they will chase given the chance.
Training An Australian Shepherd
Training goes hand and hand with Aussies. They are about as close as you can get to a dog that will excel in training, as long as you start them young enough. If you don’t start them young enough, you can run into the problem where their herding instincts fully take over. Then it can be extremely hard or impossible to break them from that path. They are incredibly smart and won’t need any form of punishment when they do something wrong. No dog should be punished, they should instead be praised when they do things the right way.
Exercise is an understatement, this dog needs a lot of it. They are naturally a breed that needs that physical activity throughout the day. If you have an active family that is outdoors in the back yard or at the park a lot, this dog is going to love that. If you don’t have an outdoor area that you can use to give the dog the activity they need, you can always take them for long walks and other things outside. This dog will love almost any game that you can think of. They are quick learners to and will catch on to almost anything very quickly.
