| STORIES ABOUT HEMI: |
Mary Hawley, of Windsor Aussies says:
Ruth named Hemi after the Chrysler Hemi enigine, considered in 1968 to be
THE top engine! Hemi was quite a dog. He was more welcome in our house than
most people! A very intelligent, gentle, well behaved dog. You couldn't help
but love him. His intelligence was beyond belief, when you consider all the
events he excelled in. He could have been taught most anything! He excelled
in Search & Rescue, and could both "air scent" and "track". Ruth and Hemi
were a part of the Colorado Canine Search Group, [when] Hemi wasn't even 1 1/2
years old! He had earned his CD prior to this, with scores of 198 1/2, 200,
& 199!
[Hemi] was blue merle w/ white, and moderate in size. His coat was clear
and "full". A very appealing dog!...
Lori Acierto, ASCA Breeder Judge says:
... On a trip home from a show in OR (where they had
been living) Ruth was involved in a bad traffic accident in which Hemi was
thrown out of the camper and was lost for several days.....when he was found,
the tendons in one of his front legs, had been completely severed.
The vets at a local University Veterinary Hospital surgically repaired him and as they waited
to see if it worked, he contracted Distemper! They treated him for the
Distemper and he was up and walking, etc. soon, minus a few toes! ..they
eventually discovered that the Distemper treatment had permanently damaged
his liver or kidneys (not sure which) and he had to take medication daily for
the rest of his life! He was approximately 3 years old at the time, and working on his
UD, and Ruth was told he most likely would not see his 5th birthday..well, he
lived to the ripe old age of 14 1/2!!
... [Hemi] also survived a crash landing in an
airplane while working as a Search & Rescue dog in Colorado. ...
...[My family and I] had the honor of caring for [Hemi] for a few months when Ruth had to have major
surgery and did not trust anyone else with his care....Hemi & I worked
together and won 2nd HS Aussie & HS Junior at the ASC of AZ Specialty in 1976!
Here I am a 15-year-old junior, handling a dog who had scored PERFECT 200's in
his career...don't think *I* wasn't nervous! We scored a 189, which isn't
shabby, for only working together 2 months ! He also helped me win BJH at a
show, and he even picked up a Best Of Breed at 8 years of age, while he was with us! ... |
